Big Hero 6 Manga Volume One Review (Slight Spoiler Warning)

Big Hero Six 1

Big Hero 6 (Manga) is owned by Marvel and Disney, and is written by Haruki Ueno, and translated by Alethea and Athena Nibley.

Alright, I was planing on having One Piece be the next thing I reviewed, but due to the pacing, that has been delayed for now. So, instead, I decided to review the first volume of the Big Hero 6 manga! I’ll admit, I didn’t think that this was going to be translated to English, which made me sad because I really wanted to read it. But, as you awesome readers can see, it was translated!

Big Hero 6 is definitely a fun read. But don’t go into it thinking that it is going to be like the movie, because there are quite a few differences. I’m not going to delve into them too much, however, as I don’t want to spoil too much of the story for anyone who’s interested in reading it themselves. But, one difference that I will point out is that Tadashi is still alive when Hiro is in college, as opposed to the movie where Tadashi dies before Hiro goes to the college.

Anyway, the storyline is definitely interesting. Since it is different from the movie, even if you have watched the movie, you won’t really know exactly what will happen next. I mean, the basic story elements from the movie are still there, but they’re just different enough to keep things interesting. The special chapter at the end is also really cute, and helps add to the story, not much, but a little.

But, what really impressed me was the artwork. I’ve always been a fan of the manga/anime art style, and Big Hero 6 was no exception. Of course Baymax was cute, but Hiro had a whole new dimension of cute added to him. He has a sparkle in his eyes that just really adds to his character.

All in all, Big Hero 6 was definitely as good as I expected it to be, and was a very pleasant surprise to find at my bookstore. I highly recommend it to any of you awesome readers who enjoyed the movie Big Hero 6, just remember that the manga does not follow the movie. And if you haven’t watched the movie, you should still give this manga a shot. Who knows, maybe it will get you interested in the movie.

A solid review Strawberry! This was a fun volume and I agree that making it a little different from the movie is a good thing so that we don’t totally know what to expect going forward. Hypothetically, what do you think you would rate the volume on a 1-5 or 1-10 scale? You did a good job of avoiding spoilers and I would argue that the brother dying isn’t really a spoiler, but I suppose that it could be. I’m certainly looking forward to checking out the next volume.

I like your reviewing style and am looking forward to your future reviews. They’re direct and to the point while explaining what you liked about the volume. Of course, don’t hesitate to bring up any small or big critiques as well when they pop up. There really wasn’t much of anything to dislike in this volume though as it was a fun read from start to finish.

Thanks! I didn’t really have anything that I didn’t like about the volume (except maybe the pig-teacher guy near the beginning, but I’m pretty sure that the reader isn’t supposed to like him, so I don’t think it deducts anything from it), so I guess if I rated it I would give it a 10.

Thanks again! The things I’ve reviewed so far haven’t really had any big complaints from me, which is why I don’t mention very many in my reviews. But, One Piece will definitely have some complaints, namely the about the pacing. One Piece will have to wait, though, because there’s another anime that I will probably do a review for next.

Ah, looking forward to seeing what the anime review is about. I see what you mean as there’s not much to really dislike in Big Hero 6. I can certainly imagine that One Piece will have some shining negatives with the pacing. I see that it hasn’t gotten better on that area yet. Hopefully it starts to feel a little better in the Enel arc possibly.

The anime review is up now. πŸ™‚
Even though I know I should be finishing up the last couple of episodes that I have left until I get to episode 50, I just haven’t been motivated to watch One Piece. I’ll have to try to get back motivated after I finish the anime series that I am currently watching.

Heh heh, well just wait. In the current chapters, it’s been a year and a half since we’ve even seen one of the main characters because all of that has taken place in the span of a single day. So, I’m afraid that the pacing will certainly stay a little dicey. Still, looking forward to the review when it comes out. I read your new review while on the train, but haven’t had a chance to comment yet. Will do!

Ah, Hiro looks so cute on that cover~ :3

Looks like a good read! I’m usually kind of wary about books based on movies (and vice versa), but it seems like Big Hero 6 translates pretty well as a manga. Also, I am all for a version of the story where Tadashi lives longer than he did in the movie (my heart still hurts ;_;)!
